OTTAWA — Canada’s state-assisted suicide program, called MAiD, was sold by the Liberal government as a “stringently limited, carefully monitored system,” a rare option of last resort for people at the very end of life.
MAID is an incredibly disgusting program. It takes desperate people with little hope and convinces them to kill themselves. Just like the Taliban does.
As a former healthcare worker who retired in 2021 I can confirm that this was already happening then. Coworkers would say the dr should talk to them about MAID and I would tell them that was not our job it was up to the patient to bring it up not the drs and nurses. There was no education provided to healthcare workers on how to deal with this only a quick staff meeting to say you can bow out if you don’t agree. I still view this as legalized murder and I couldn’t believe how many coworkers were okay with this. To them it was a justification to deal with society’s eroding morality to end one’s strife. Yet no one offered support to those who participated on how to deal with the emotions of your involvement. It has created in our medical community a hardened type of government funded legalized mass murderers that seem to revel in their immoral justification. What has happened to “at first do no harm!”
Also check out Kelsi Sheren's substack, as she's a Military Veteran who's advocating for other Veterans who've been offered MAID vs receiving any support for their medical issues. FYI - BC has a very high MAID 'count' with physicians offering MAID as an 'alternative' upon diagnosing patients with cancer, especially if said patient questions looking for alternative holistic healing sources. Yes, MAID was considered a 'humane, caring' approach in supporting the terminally ill from having to suffer greatly in prolonging their demise. Yet, from what I witnessed in losing a family member to this process, it wasn't an entirely peaceful exit! This has become the standard model of 'care' it's murder by design and there are thousands of clinicians engaging in the process with glee. Just how much MONEY do they or their hospitals receive for every death injection they administer? THAT is another unexplored question. We should ALL be very concerned as to how far the government is going to go with this, given the WEF'S agendas!
Ironically, if you try to kill yourself with tainted drugs, they go above and beyond to keep you alive against your will, and one of their key arguments against firearm ownership is the risk of suicide. Is it true that one must sign up as an organ donor to be eligible for MAiD? Is that the side industry no one is talking about?
Yes, this. They are against suicide by drug overdose and firearms. Is it because the organs are too damaged in the first instance and likely not fresh enough in the second?
I don't think it's as insidious as that, although it could be. I think it's just the natural Canadian cuckoldry that makes us think we need permission from the government to do anything.
OK if I may way in! I am an 88 year veteran, having served 31 years before retiring.
During that period the use of certain chemicals has caused a terminal medical condition … with an outlook that is very troubling… with cancer “creeping into my spine”.
MY CASE WAS “WON” AGAINST VAC on the basis of 3 “other similar approved cases”
.
The VAC has refused to payout a lump sum for the injury…. and has used every “excuse” not to do so…… instead providing an insulting “monthly” amount.
The lump sum would help me prepare for the future, but they know very well that because of my age…. it is the cheaper way for VAC to go…and to hell with my suffering.
Therefore, I have no other option that to take MAID “SERVICE”. Hey VAC is even offering it to veterans such as myself. (Under investigation I understand)
I always thought that the Ministry of Veteran Affairs looked after the best interest of veterans! I suggest the very opposite.
They have come up with no less than 2 different legislations why I am not allowed a lump sum payout.
NONE of them make any sense. They are only excuses.
However, in my case, as I’m sure many others… MAID is a quick way to end suffering… especially so trying g to deal with the suffering dealing with the bureaucracy of VAC.
I’m so sorry that your life and service to our country has been met with such reprehensible treatment. Our country desperately needs a morality reset, starting at the top. God speed, John.
There has been high turnover in ministers at the Department of Veterans Affairs, current minister Jill McKnight yesterday told MPs. Figures show departmental staffing grew by two-thirds while the number of veterans in Canada declined and cabinet cycled through a new minister every 58 weeks on average: "What message does this send to the veterans?" I disagree entirely with the tone and content of this article. MAID is about giving citizens access to assisted dying when they are grievously ill. This right applies also to the disabled and persons with mental illness. Personally I want the right to die when I am terminally ill. I do not want to suffer needlessly. I would prefer to die at home, surrounded by friends and family than in an intensive care ward in the middle of the night by myself..
It was the courts, not the Liberal government that gave us this right. The government was reluctantly responsive to the legal decision and tried to narrow the conditions for MAID.
Some religious groups support suffering during death. That is their right if they wish but it is not for me.
The comments below are so far off base it offends me.
Key data and argument is here: Roughly one in twenty deaths in Canada is now attributed to MAiD. On those numbers alone, rather than moving ahead with this expansion agenda, an external human-rights review should come first — and it should test whether Canada’s existing system is already breaching the rights of disabled, poor and socially isolated people before any further gates are opened.
In a statement this week citing its own prior research, Cardus, a faith-based think tank, added that Health Canada’s own data underlines a massive expansion beyond the “stringently limited, carefully monitored system” of last resort cited by the Supreme Court in 2015.
“Almost 58 percent of Track 1 MAiD recipients and more than 63 percent of Track 2 recipients reported ‘emotional distress/anxiety/fear/existential suffering’ in 2024, a significant jump from around 39 percent and 35 percent respectively in 2023,” Cardus wrote. “Meanwhile, almost half of those who died by MAiD in 2024 reported feeling like a burden on family, friends, or caregivers, maintaining the alarmingly high levels of previous years.”
It's your right to be offended by the comments. It's our right to be offended by a process that we see as gone off the rails. One can have the right to die when terminally ill and not be subjected to encouragement to end one's life because of, checks notes, obesity.
You haven't been keeping up to what is going on under the surface, have you? I support your right to MAID when there is no hope and incredible suffering. The slippery slope I was so worried about from the implementation of the program is here. It is terrifying, and needs to be scrutinized. You also need to go look up the drugs they are using. It is far from peaceful. My Aunty: "Am I drowning?"
I'm offended whenever the government is in the kill chain for one of its citizens. I never said that suicide should be discounted as a compassionate means to end suffering, I am critical of the government's implementation. It is dehumanizing, and reduces citizens to their component parts. Just another resource. No government should ever kill one of its citizens. That's why I'm against capital punishment and that is why I am against Canada's implementation of compassionate dying. If the government's finger is on the trigger it is wrong. Period. The fact that it offends you does not concern me one bit.
MAiD now requires acceptance of organ harvesting. MAiDing the depressed, lonely, mentally-ill allow for better organs that may not have been touched by desease. The gvt has found a new source of income, as per freelands suggested goals, because they don't pay for Healthcare and give you cheap killing drugs, don't pay out gvt program money's over what could have been your remaining lifetime that You paid into and they get organs for free that they literally sell to others and your family gets Nothing.
BTW: MAiD is a twisting, painful invisible to others death unlike what they tell seniors in homes that it is: Empowering, kind and lovely way to go.
This comment got my full attention, why the F does MAiD REQUIRE organ harvesting!!!
How long before MAiD consent can be falsified by a bureaucracy that needs organs that matches a genetic profile of a wealthy sick individual?
MAiD if completely voluntary should NOT mandate organ harvesting consent, this constitutes a conflict of interest when the institution has financial incentives contrary to preserving or improving lives.
Health Canada does not deserve to be called by that name. The poison in our food, in our water is out of control and they allow it, they allow anything the industry wants to poison us with. If they were on our side, we wouldn't be in that situation? Health Canada and MAID are disgusting, and we should all be ashamed of it.
When the DVA suggested that veterans explore the possibility of MAID in lieu of lobbying for proper and deserved medical/psychiatric care, this program lost every ounce of credibility it may have had.
Any watchdog dealing with this system needs to be extraordinarily vigilant in the fine print of any proposed changes. Watch very carefully for the first use of the word 'involuntary' in association with any aspect of MAID. If you offer this cutesy acronym to anyone with mental or psychiatric dysfunction, you MUST, by dictionary definition, use the word 'involuntary'. Which is exactly what the Nazis did to 250,000 German citizens - not Jews - at the start of WW II.
At 81 years old, and not in particularly good health, I'm not against MAID - in its original form and for its original intent - only. Any expansion on that is highly suspect on the part or a government who have shown practically zero interest in the well-being of Canadians.
MAID is an incredibly disgusting program. It takes desperate people with little hope and convinces them to kill themselves. Just like the Taliban does.
Right out of the Nazi's play book, history repeats.
As a former healthcare worker who retired in 2021 I can confirm that this was already happening then. And now the colleges of docs, nursing associations across the country demand your MAiD compliance or you are out!
Canada wins the prize for most corrupt nation on the planet. 🌎 WOW…anything else?
We got the drugs, the gvt corruption, gvt legalized killing on gvt employee's say-so, Venezuela has nothing on us!

She’s pretty amazing as well
Bingo: "...worry that a legal obligation to present all options is sliding into a cultural expectation to offer death."
Cultural expectation. Let that sink in.
Ironically, if you try to kill yourself with tainted drugs, they go above and beyond to keep you alive against your will, and one of their key arguments against firearm ownership is the risk of suicide. A very slippery slope, Soylent Green here we come.
From my understanding, the government then parts you out as spares, including the sale of biological material for research etc.
Yes, this. They are against suicide by drug overdose and firearms. Is it because the organs are too damaged in the first instance and likely not fresh enough in the second?

Canada is the 4th highest user of antidepressants in the world. The US is number one. Imagine if they allow MAID in mental health cases.

Hi Derryck, the Op Ed is not offered lightly, the data and the trend is the main driver for a call to examine the program.

Removing those costing a lot of health care money might be another incentive for governments to push MAiD.
