If you are a Chinese migrant who has achieved citizenship or landed immigrant status, whose interests are still tied to familial, business, and social circles in China, what is the reasonable expectation of how they will best serve those interests? My understanding is that the reach of the CCP into those same interests is extensive and that the CCP has no problem with instrumentalizing that alignment to it's own ends. I suspect analogous to Britain and the East India Company. I understand that to the CCP, if you are of Han Chinese descent, then you are Chinese and expected to be answerable to the Motherland. Scotland or France have no similar expectation on Canadians.
None, of this is to excuse the deep conflicts with our norms, but I believe the vast majority of people are not brave, are not willing to put their neck on the line for ideals, and are hoping to go about their business without attracting too much attention. Arguably, that attitude is the fruit of liberal democratic values.
However, the moment elected office comes into play then this is where the rubber meets the road.
