Nice try. The LPC doesn't get to sit in their hands, mouths shut, for 9 years while the Little Potato dismantles this country, them waltz in at the 9th hour and appoint a new, unelected, leader. No. I'm afraid the entire Liberal caucus deserves to spent the next 9 years in the same mini van that carried Kathleen Wynne, and her entire team, out of the Ontario legislature. Ideally, after this next election, Canadians will see plainly what the Liberal party truly represents - greed for power at any cost - and endeavor to ensure they never form government again. To hell with you and your board of directors.

While I am in general agreement, elections are not called simply because the governing party changes leaders. The Liberals can't appoint a leader; there would be a leadership race, just like there would still be a general election by Oct 2025. This is how our political system works. Look up Kim Campbell, Andrew Scheer, Erin O'Toole.

In BC Premier Horgan appointed Eby as his successor without a leadership race

As It was a NDP apparatchik back room deal

So Eby is our Premier but no one voted for the Champagne socialist so woke his eyes are wide shut!

Eby was selected not elected

Expand full comment

No, he did not. The BC NDP did hold a leadership race - the only other candidate was disqualified for using 3rd parties in membership drives. Say what you will about that - a climate activist was not going to beat a sitting Attorney General that had the support of his caucus. And yes, people did vote for him - indirectly. In Canada, and other Westminster parliament-type governments, we vote for the party, not the leader. The BC NDP was elected to a term of office regardless of who the leader is. Same for the post-Jason Kenney UCP under Danielle Smith - who was Premier for 13 months before an election was held.

In one year time, give or take, we will go to the polls. Each and everyone of us who decides to vote, will step forward, and cast a ballot.

The only other possible scenario is if the Priminister decides to step down. Then thats a different kettle of fish so yo speak.

Other than that we will have to hold on and wait.

The thrust of the authors argument is that the Liberals need to get rid of Trudeau to save their party. While I will not argue that Trudeau is a terrible leader and prime minister, I cannot see the point of saving the Liberal party of Canada. From the Mark Norman affair (a deliberate attempt at pork barrel crony capitalism) to SNC (a deliberate attempt to subvert the law) to the current Chinese interference campaign, the Liberal government, and Liberal supporters have actively worked to use devious and dishonest means to better themselves and line the pockets of their friends. Bill Morneau left when he realized that fiscal responsibility was frowned upon, and JWR left when she wasn't allowed to uphold the law. The remainder of the caucus is equally dishonest, inept and imcompetent. Christia Freeland is an economically illiterate finance minister, and Melanie Joly a foreign affairs minister happy to play footsie with anti-semites and terrorists. The bobbleheads have happily nodded along for 9 years with this excruciating devotion to culture wars and climate change. Re-useable shopping bags are worse for the environment than plastic, EV's are miles away from "zero emission" (but I guess upstream/downstream only applies to oil pipelines, right?), and a plastic straw trucked to an urban landfill will not end up in a sea turtle's nose. Foolish, ideologically driven nonsense that flies in the face of any decent research and is economically suicidal. Trudeau is a terrible leader of a terrible group of people who went along with it all. If you DON'T support a particular party, I can understand that. But how does anybody actually support the Liberal Party of Canada and campaign for their continued existence. We can't be rid of them soon enough.

I don’t know much about the political process in Canada overall since the bulk of what I know comes from Canadian crime watch shows and social media responses to the “I’m moving to Canada if X becomes President” rhetoric every 4 years from whoever is upset about the US election. The Canadian response is usually, “nah, we’re good but thanks for thinking of us” (appropriately). And since I’m in Wisconsin I feel like our accents are 2nd cousins by marriage. But I am genuinely interested and also just curious on your opinion(s)- was there a global shift to extremism and in democratic nations especially, has there been an acceptance of subpar ethnics and normalization of scandalous, illegal, and almost boastingly transparent corrupt behavior? Obviously the U.S is unbelievably corrupt and void of morality- has been for a long time, but our politicians and media are to the point where it’s extremely dangerous and frankly scary if you’re a human just trying to live life with human decency and compassion. I just have been seeing your comments and one of the contributors for a publication I follow speaks similarly about UK’s political landscape.

That was a lot of rambling to ask a simple question: has it always been this bad, or am I just getting older, more educated and realizing just how bad it is? Because everyone seems so to have their own version of unhinged lunatic who either doesn’t care or doesn’t know what the people want or need and a gang of unqualified and corrupt sycophants making a mockery of civil service for their own profit. Because it does seem to be almost a unanimous, global consensus- Planet earth has bad leadership.

Hi Emily :) In answer to your question, I don't think it's getting worse. I think we are becoming more aware of it. And that's mostly due to the demise of the legacy media and the rise of platforms like this. It's similar to how we are more aware of things like tornadoes these days, not because there are more, but because everyone walks around with a camera in their pocket and access to the world wide web. And as they say, the best disinfectant is sunshine, so greater awareness is a good thing.

Do you see a huge generational divide like we have based on the older generation still believing mainstream media and their narrative? The older generations (as you may have seen embarrassing trying to discuss TikTok) believe any information from younger progressives is misinformation from China. My mother told me China is behind the the pro Palestinian (or “pro Hamas as she calls it) protests. Despite me and other veterans out there calling for the end of a genocide, the narrative remains the same for them.

With the help of the NDP, and the Trudeau appointed Senate, they are passing garbage legislation that will be difficult to amend or undo with the current Senate, and they lie. The Liberals are no longer liberal. Rather they are socialist/Marxist or worse. They are interested in their own power and will do anything to keep it.

And replace him with who? Freeland? She's poison. Carney? Pure globalist establishment - like Trudeau and Freehand. Who?

I don't think Liberals and their supporters (I used to be a 'swing voter'. I'd be a registered Independent in the U.S.) realize what Trudeau has done here. I've never seen this country this divided. Far greater men have fallen for far less. Leaders have resigned willingly understanding when they lose the moral authority they no longer have the ability and credibility to speak to the people. They simply will not listen. We're not a communist country but tell you what, Trudeau sure acts like it's one because he's in despotic territory now.

On what grounds does he permit himself to lecture (and sometimes gaslight) us - and countries - about freedom and democracy after he illegally invoked the EA, breached the rule of law on numerous occasions including obstruction of justice, Bill C-11, 18, and now 63? To say nothing of not having done anything to quell and stem Chinese influence here and the unnecessary gun control bill that only punishes LAW ABIDING Canadians. He's driven by identity politics with a mean vindictive streak and little else. That's the perception.

And that budget only made things worse. People PERCEIVE it to be an attack on their ability to achieve wealth and prosperity. Same with his nonsensical carbon tax. People are no longer accepting it. Reading the room is an important skill set. It takes courage to take the hint and do the right thing.

No moral authority while being propped up by a third wheel party (and the NDP are every bit as culpable in creating this mess) while ramming through highly divisive legislation that threatens Canadian civil liberties is BUT the actions of a despot is it not?

He's done significant damage and nothing short of the decimation of the Liberal party is in order because it's the only way they'll learn. The level of corruption and endless scandals we've witnessed under this regime would not have been accepted in most counties.

Personally, I don't know of anyone who likes him. I know of seven who have left the country not seeing a future thinking he has laid the foundation of an illiberal country moving forward. This is serious.

Canada needs right this ship. I'm not so sure we can. Hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for this piece and information.

There is no saviour here especially Mark Carney, if that’s how you think you will save your party. More smoke and mirrors. Desperate to save yourselves not Canada. Neither has any education or competence in economics or finance. Further I’m very angry that T will not openly and honestly answer questions even on an issue as serious as Chinese interference. Your party is so partisan that it sacrifices the good of the country, the economy and the people for self interest. The entire bunch has to be kicked out and the sooner the better. Hopefully voters will do worse to the LPC than they did to Kathleen in Ontario. One Liberal seat is one too many. Some comments on this thread want to see the Prime Minister walk the electoral plank and get whumped in the next election.

That would be true justice for a failed, vain leader who refuses to step aside. However, it is a long 15 months before a scheduled election, and Canadians cannot afford to have this Prime Minister and his inner circle of advisors continue on their ruinous and divisive rampage across the economy and government operations.

Enough already.

Expand full comment

I can understand the rationale of the argument that Trudeau should step aside before he does any more harm -- we know that the guy is uniquely capable of causing long term damage to the country in a few days or weeks, never mind a year or more -- but I think it would be better for Canada in the long run if he were to stay on and walk the electoral plank, simply because that way the Liberal Party, and Liberal political culture, would have to face the music as well. Their vision of Canada is a longstanding project that didn't spring from Trudeau's brain-pan; he just advanced their mission by blocking for them, using the force of his name brand, and his arrogance and contempt and obtuse posturing.

The LPC's elitist, entitled, deeply corrupt culture runs deep -- it's generational at this point -- and it should face a reckoning at the polls under the leader they chose to perfect the form. If Trudeau were to step aside before the election, whoever replaces him would get a tongue bath from the media, his or her approval rating would immediately soar above Trudeau's (it couldn't possibly go down, Trudeau's was a remarkable minus 38 a couple of days ago) and eat into Poilievre's, and the Liberal Party would inevitably skate away having avoided a good portion of responsibility. "See, we got rid of him! He's gone now. We good? Can we agree on a reset for a better tomorrow?"

The best thing for the country would be for the LPC to meet its long deserved fate on the ocean floor, with Trudeau at the helm.
